The biggest reveal: Minecraft is getting a fourth dimension

Minecraft Live’s central announcement was not simply another biome or mob. Mojang confirmed that the Sift—the new dimension built for Minecraft Dungeons II—will also become part of Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition in 2027.

That makes the Sift the first dimension added to the core game in more than 14 years, joining the Overworld, Nether and End. Mojang showed an in-development glimpse but stopped short of explaining how players will enter it or which parts of the Dungeons II version will transfer directly into the sandbox game.

What Mojang has confirmed about the Sift

In Minecraft Dungeons II, the Sift is a separate reality with its own ecosystem, rules, hazards and inhabitants. Xbox’s official briefing names two of its biomes—the Meadows and the Carapace—and describes shifting tides that can affect characters, hazardous blocks and mobs adapted to conditions that may harm the player.

The visual identity is bright and otherworldly rather than a simple extension of the Nether or End. Mojang says darker areas also exist, but it is intentionally holding back some locations so Dungeons II players can discover them at launch.

Minecraft Dungeons II is the first way into the Sift

Minecraft Dungeons II launches September 29, 2026. Its campaign begins with the original game’s camp destroyed and expands the mission structure into an interconnected world with quests, shortcuts, fast travel and areas that change as the player intervenes.

The sequel also adds jumping, more vertical exploration, a revised equipment system, talismans, matchmaking and the ability to combine couch co-op with online multiplayer. Mojang presents the Sift as both part of the story’s environmental crisis and a preview of ideas that will eventually reach the main game.

The next Minecraft game drop heads into ice caves

The show also gave the first look at the next game drop for the core game. Its new underground ice-cave biome contains ice and calcite, ceiling-grown icicles and ice crystals that grow from the ground and emit a soft light.

A new frozen zombie variant will inhabit the caves. Mojang says its attacks can apply a freezing effect, while some variants can throw ice balls. The mob does not yet have a public name, and the recap does not announce a release date or final title for the drop.

Other announcements—and what was already known

Mojang outlined a broader creator-platform goal: making it easier to create, manage and share game content. The presentation described a direction rather than a dated product rollout, so it should not be read as confirmation of a new public editor, marketplace policy or launch schedule.

Minecraft World at Chessington World of Adventures Resort in London is still planned for 2027. The show added more detail, including the Minecraft World Hotel and Escape the Nether, described as an indoor-and-outdoor roller coaster. The attraction and its 2027 window had already been announced earlier in 2026.

The recap also repeated the October 27, 2026 release date for Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2. Mojang and Nintendo announced that date in August, along with Vibrant Visuals and an upgrade path for existing Switch owners. It is useful launch context, but not a newly dated reveal from Minecraft Live.

What Minecraft Live did not confirm

  • An exact 2027 release date or named game drop for the Sift in Java & Bedrock Edition.
  • How players will reach the Sift or whether access will mirror Minecraft Dungeons II.
  • A complete list of Sift biomes, blocks, mobs, structures or progression systems.
  • The final name and release date of the frozen-cave game drop.
  • A public launch date for the creator-platform improvements described during the show.
  • Complete ticketing, hotel or opening-date details for Minecraft World in London.

Those gaps are not a reason to dilute the announcement with speculation. Mojang has established the direction and broad timing; later snapshots, previews and official deep dives should supply the operational details.

Why the Sift matters beyond one showcase

A fourth dimension changes Minecraft at a structural level. Dimensions are not isolated feature packs: they can reshape exploration, progression, resources, building palettes and the reasons players move between worlds. The long gap since the last addition also means Mojang will have to make the Sift feel essential without flattening the identities of the Nether and End.

Dungeons II now acts as the first playable expression of that idea. The safest expectation is not that every mechanic will transfer unchanged, but that its biomes, hazards and ecology provide an early vocabulary for what Mojang wants the Sift to become in Minecraft proper.
